Student Affairs Semester at Sea for graduate students

Next summer, Semester at Sea is launching a new academic and experiential component focusing on graduate students in higher education called Student Affairs at Sea. This program is intended to introduce graduate students to international perspectives on student affairs.

Selected students will enroll in a graduate-level course taught by Dr.

Kathleen Manning, professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration at the University of Vermont. Professor Manning also serves as the editor of the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice. Course credit will be issued through the University of Virginia, the Semester at Sea academic sponsor. Participating graduate students will have the opportunity to intern with student services staff aboard the ship and to partake in organized visits to various institutions of higher education. The itinerary for the 10-week voyage is the Mediterranean (Europe and North Africa). A limited number of paid graduate internships are available as "Program Assistants."

Approximately 550 undergraduates from colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and abroad will also comprise the shipboard community.

This exciting opportunity will provide an unparalleled and hands-on exposure to internationalization and globalization in higher education.

OCA Leadership 101 Applications

June 10, 2009

Dear Friends,

OCA has a long-standing commitment to identify and empower the future leaders of the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) community. This commitment is reflected in our unique APIA U: Leadership 101 training, specifically tailored for Asian Pacific Islander American college students. Students from these trainings have gone on to become strong leaders both on campus and in their communities, and attribute OCA for sparking their interest. This training is generously funded by State Farm®.

We are currently seeking applications for APIA U: Leadership 101 facilitators. Applicants should have strong facilitating skills with several years of experience working with students on identity empowerment, leadership development, and organizing. Knowledge about issues affecting the diverse APIA community is a plus. Applicants from the Midwest and South are strongly encouraged to apply. Deadline is June 30, 2009

Trainings are co-led with another facilitator and will be required to lead at least two trainings. Facilitators will be compensated. There will be a mandatory training at the OCA National Convention in San Francisco, CA on August 6-9, 2009. Facilitators will learn more about OCA, the curriculum and best teaching styles when working with a group of college students.

APIA U: Leadership 101 will be held at eleven different locations throughout the country. A maximum of sixty participants for each site will be selected from various colleges and universities to participate in the one day training. These trainings are intended to provide students with the opportunity to develop, grow, and improve their leadership skills throughout college and beyond. The trainings are based off the Critical APIA Leadership Framework (CALF) developed over the course of these trainings. An emphasis will be placed on helping students gain a better understanding of empowerment from individual, organizational, cultural, and political perspectives.

By helping students understand leadership as a process rather than a position and as a collective movement rather than an individual effort, we hope to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the APIA community. We invite you to join us in this process!

For more information, please contact dlee@ocanational.org.

Best regards,

George C. Wu

OCA, Executive Director

Looking for Asian American LGB students for a survey

Colleagues and Students: In fall 2008 we launched a research project entitled: /Negotiating the complexities of being self-identified as both Asian American and lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB)/. This project had two parts: (1) a web-based survey that was distributed widely through listservs and individuals, and (2) about 10-12 open-ended telephone interviews about students’ experiences. *While we have closed the data collection for the web-based survey, we still need your help in finding students from across the United States to participate in the telephone interviews! Please forward this email to students who might be interested in participating in this study. * The purpose of this study is to gather some preliminary, baseline data about the breadth of the community identified as Asian American and lesbian, gay or bisexual LGB), as well as some of your/their experiences in higher education. Right now, we are looking for currently enrolled students in higher education to engage in a telephone interview about their college experiences as an Asian American and LGB identified person. Participants must be between the ages of 18-24 years old, enrolled in a degree-seeking program at any level in higher education (including grad school, and professional programs), and loosely identify with the terms Asian American and LGB. While we understand that these terms (Asian American and LGB) are far from inclusive of all the complexities and preferred self-labeling that the community embraces, we are using these terms in an effort to cast a wide net to capture the broadest group of participants. The Human Subjects Institutional Review Board at Western Michigan University, the home institution of the primary and student investigators, Dr. Donna M. Talbot and Mr. Sean Pepin, has approved this study. Both researchers identify with or consider themselves strong allies for the social groups identified in this study. If you are interested in participating in this study, please click on the link below. It will transport you to a Zoomerang survey where you can share your contact information with us. Once we get students’ contact information, we will send out a Consent Form before conducting a screening for fit with the protocol for the study. At indicate in the Consent document, students may withdraw from the study at any point. Thank you for your help. To send us your contact info, complete the survey by clicking on the link below:
