OCA Leadership 101 Applications

June 10, 2009

Dear Friends,

OCA has a long-standing commitment to identify and empower the future leaders of the Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) community. This commitment is reflected in our unique APIA U: Leadership 101 training, specifically tailored for Asian Pacific Islander American college students. Students from these trainings have gone on to become strong leaders both on campus and in their communities, and attribute OCA for sparking their interest. This training is generously funded by State Farm®.

We are currently seeking applications for APIA U: Leadership 101 facilitators. Applicants should have strong facilitating skills with several years of experience working with students on identity empowerment, leadership development, and organizing. Knowledge about issues affecting the diverse APIA community is a plus. Applicants from the Midwest and South are strongly encouraged to apply. Deadline is June 30, 2009

Trainings are co-led with another facilitator and will be required to lead at least two trainings. Facilitators will be compensated. There will be a mandatory training at the OCA National Convention in San Francisco, CA on August 6-9, 2009. Facilitators will learn more about OCA, the curriculum and best teaching styles when working with a group of college students.

APIA U: Leadership 101 will be held at eleven different locations throughout the country. A maximum of sixty participants for each site will be selected from various colleges and universities to participate in the one day training. These trainings are intended to provide students with the opportunity to develop, grow, and improve their leadership skills throughout college and beyond. The trainings are based off the Critical APIA Leadership Framework (CALF) developed over the course of these trainings. An emphasis will be placed on helping students gain a better understanding of empowerment from individual, organizational, cultural, and political perspectives.

By helping students understand leadership as a process rather than a position and as a collective movement rather than an individual effort, we hope to cultivate the next generation of leaders in the APIA community. We invite you to join us in this process!
